In March 2026, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published the fourth edition of ISO 14155:2026, replacing the previous edition from 2020. This is the medical device global reference for GCP conduct that many regulatory authorities recognize. EMA Releases Guidelines on Inclusion of Pregnant and Breastfeeding Individuals in Clinical Trials

On June 4, 2025 the European Medicines Agency (EMA) posted a guideline titled: ICH E21 Guideline on inclusion of pregnant and breastfeeding individuals in clinical trials. Individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding make up a significant portion of the world’s population, however, the European Union (EU) reports that less than 0.4% of clinical trials currently submitted to the EU include pregnant people and only 0.1% include lactating individuals. This guideline highlights the importance of including these individuals as well as the steps that should be taken in order to ensure their safety during a trial.  

OGPS and FDA discuss FDA’s Role in the DoH Revision

In December 2024, following the release of the 2024 revision of the Declaration of Helsinki (DoH), US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) staff shared the FDA’s perspective on what their role was in the development of the 2024 DoH and how it may impact FDA procedures. The DoH is intended to guide clinical research involving human participants that is often used as the foundation for other guidelines such as the International Council for Harmonisation (ICH) Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

In October 2024, the World Medical Association (WMA) announced the adoption of the 2024 revision of the Declaration of Helsinki (DoH) during the 75th WMA General Assembly in Helsinki, Finland, the same location where the Declaration was initially adopted 60 years prior.
